A Message in the Flames.
An old warrior of many campaigns sits by his campfire in the desert of Alhambra. He drinks of his
wine, and partakes of his evening meal. The fire itself begins to whisper him.........

Poulad....It is I, Samas. I hope this message finds you in good health, and your usual cantankerous spirits. I am well, and I have many stories to tell you upon my return. It is beautiful in this place. I have seen many interesting things and met many interesting people. Three in particular have helped ease the old pain. You were right, my friend. There is healing out there for even such as I. The warrior you know as Gilgamesh appears to be doing well and he is still larger than life. I am about to embark on another small journey. It appears to be a promising one. I will endeavor to keep you better informed in the future. You of all people know how easily I get distracted. Suffice it to say, I have pulled my nose out of my books, and my plants. As you would say, I have joined the real world again. I will be sure to visit the next time I am home. Take care until then my old friend........

Storybit..Installment Two

Thanks for being patient with me folks.

I turn and face her. Flowing white robe, long raven black hair, ruby red lips, and eyes the color of bright emeralds. Her

voice is sultry and melodious. "What brings you out here, Samas? Come to say good bye? I am flattered."

My breath catches in my throat. It always does. I try to put on my warmest smile, and hope I succeed. "Marhta, you

know I would not leave without saying farewell. I have also come to beg of you not to..."

She interrupts me immediately, a brief flash of anger or annoyance appears in her eyes. "Do not bother, Samas. We

have been over this again and again. I will fight this....thing with or without your help. I have stood by too long and done

nothing."

Irritation flares within me, and I know it shows. "And what exactly are you going to do against the Blight, Marhta? You

will be corrupted or destroyed by it. It is to powerful for your magics, or mine, or both of them together. Please do not

throw away your life so uselessly. I plan to come back with assistance and perhaps...."

"Enough!" She shouts. She is angry. Whether it is at me, or the bleakness of the entire situation I am not sure. It is

probably both. "I have waited long enough, Amir. It is time for you to go your way. And I shall go mine."

I nod. It is time for me to do what I came to do and say farewell. Though I try to leven my voice, I can hear the sadness in

it myself. "All right, Marhta. Then I guess this is farewell. I can only hope and pray that we shall meet again. I will miss

you greatly. There is a horse behind the outcropping. It and the bronze weapons and armor with it are yours. Consider it my

parting gift to you."

I turn to go. I am to the point of tears. I did not want this to end in such a fashion. I begin to make my way down the rocky facing.

Her soft voice speaks behind me, and I can hear the pain in it. "Samas," She calls softly, "Please....wait..."

Storybit....Installment One.

Pardon me for being a bit behind in this folks. I hope you enjoy it.

I look out from among this outcropping of rock. Rub al Kali appears the way it always has except for the Blight. As I gaze out on the dunes of the Forbidden Desert, I wonder if I will ever see my home again. The moonlight looks beautiful on the dune sands. It is only marred by the scar of the Blight here and there. And what an ugly scar upon my homeland it is.

I am Samas Bin-Zahra. I am of the Royal Family of Alhambra. I hold the position of The Royal Arbitrator of the Court. Supposedly, it is a position of esteem. What it really means is that my mother, The Queen of this land, shoves any decision she doesn't want to deal with, on my shoulders. It is a position of responsibility that I take seriously. It is a position that I must abandon for awhile. My duties and my fate appear to be taking me elsewhere for the time being.

My fate, it is what brings me to this outcropping of rock in the dunes of the Forbidden Desert tonight. Though I have not needed salt nor steel with Marhta for years and years, I keep them ready. She is a Jinn, a Sila of her kind to be more specific. For many years she has been my friend, my teacher, and if truth be told, we have always been lovers. I will note that it has never happened in actuality. But if thoughts count for anything, we have been lovers for decades. I feel rather sick within my heart.

She will appear at any moment, and then the fight will begin again. Her kind has suffered from the Blight as much, if not more than mine. I have always been able to convince her not to go into it. But now that I am leaving, she will go. I know it as sure as I breathe. I also know she will not come back. For I am also a Priest of Ab, and I can feel Her Doom heavily upon her.

There she is. She has snuck up behind me as her kind can do so well. She will be changing form, taking the shape of breath-taking beauty that I have become so comfortable with, and so guarded against. I must turn and face her. And in doing so, I may destroy one of the foundations of my life.
